The Forgetful Saga

So the saga of forgetfulness continues! I really should just stop cooking after 8 PM, except that this is when my husband usually gets home. I was making brownies (out of the box....b/c who makes them by scratch that late :) last night. When I went to put them in the pan, I was amazed at how well they just dropped out of the bowl.....hmm....should've been my first clue, but nope, i just continued to spread out in the pain. They were spreading really funny....very stiff batch of brownies. Still didn't get the clue. Into the oven they go. I turn around to start cleaning up my mess on the counter and there sits the eggs in the bowl yet. Duh....no wonder they were so stiff. Thankfully only a few minutes had gone by, so I pulled them out of the oven, add the eggs, stir until finally smooth, and pour into the pan AGAIN. Wow, look how nicely they spread out in the pan now. Good grief....I'm seriously losing it!

By the way, the brownies turned out DEE-lish. They went great with vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, and whipped cream while they were still warm and gooey!

Summer Work

My Hubby is blessed with a wonderful job. He works as a superintendent for an oilfield company. He enjoys what he does, and he's good at what he does. He is able to provide for our family, and we can every once in a while splurge on the toys of life. He is one of the hardest workers I know next to my Dad. He is one of those guys who isn't afraid to get in and get dirty with his crew. In fact, he much prefers that to the desk work that he has acquired over the past year. And his guys respect him for that. With the desk work came a fantastic promotion but also a lot more responsibility. He is the main organization behind all of the company's excavation projects. And with summer finally here that means he is balls to the wall most days now. Gone is winter and the predictable 10 hour a day, 5 day a week work schedule.

In oilfield, summer is IT!! It is when they get the job done and make the money. This summer being no different from any other. He has 9 projects to man this summer and yesterday got his first emergency call. So begins the long nights and the hours away from home and family. He left for work Friday morning at 5:30, and as I sit here Saturday night at 10:35, he is still not home. He has not seen his son since Monday (yes, almost a week ago) night and that was only for 15 minutes before he went to bed. What was suppose to be a 3 day weekend (and probably the only full weekend off for the summer) has now turned into a disaster. He averages at least 3 days a week where he does see Monkey because he gets home after 7:30 or 8:00 when Monkey has already called it a day. I tried at one point for a while to keep him up, so he could see his Daddy for at least a few minutes. This only creates a fussy boy and an unhappy Mommy who has to deal. No fun for me or Daddy who gets to hear about it.

I guess I'm just writing in frustration and sadness right now. Frustration for going at this parent thing solo a lot of the time. I thank my lucky stars that we had Monkey in January when his work schedule was more predictable and flexible. I can't imagine what my sanity would be like if we had Monkey now, and I had to do the colicky nights all alone. You would probably have to coax me out of the hole I had buried myself in. Sadness for all the moments Monkey's Daddy is missing out on. The coos, giggles, smiles, roll overs, and giant strides this little boy is continuing to make. He seems to be doing something new everyday now. He's been on rice cereal for a week, and his Daddy has only seen him eat it the first time.

Summer is the backdrop for this playground we call Alaska. When the sun never sets and the fish are jumping like crazy. Where rivers beckon you and you can't drive a mile down the highway without seeing a camper drive by. We get to play less and less each summer. Each year I pray that the summer will be more predictable and forgiving as far as the work schedule goes. And every year it seems to get more hectic. I guess that's what happens with a growing company and a workhorse husband. One of the things I fell in love with about him was his work ethic and now that thing is something that I almost, dare I say, despise. It's not the hard worker but the demands of the job I despise. I just pray that one day down the road the load will lighten or the demands will be passed onto someone under him. So he can come home and enjoy his family. Along with that prayer is the hope that it comes before he has grandchildren.

For now, I'm off to my empty bed in hopes that it will warm up some time during the night.

Thank goodness for shoulders

I've decided that it's a good thing I have a neck to keep my head attached to me at all times. Otherwise, I would probably forget that too. In my lack of sleep induced haze, I keep doing random forgetful things. Tonight I started to cook mac & cheese. I put the pot on the stove and then went into download some pics. I started to smell something odd. I walked out to the kitchen check it out and add my noodles to the water. Only I couldn't add noodles to my boiling water because I put the pot on the stove without any water in it. The funny smell was the pot being scorched.

Yesterday, I opened up my cabinet to put away a bowl and there sat my jar of applesauce that I got out the night before to prepare my lunch for work. Instead of putting it back in the frig where it belonged, I put it up with the bowls. I'm losing my mind!!

Crying Over Spilled Milk

I ran to Fred Meyer today to get a few items. We're completely out of milk so that being number one on the list. I grabbed a few other odds and ends and made my way to the register. She rang everything up as I was searching the diaper bag for my wallet.

I knew way back when that the day would come when I would forget my wallet because it's not natural to not carry a purse. Although, it's fairly natural now (I actually feel weird when I do carry one now when I'm without Monkey). Today being that day!! I was utterly frustrated and angry with myself because Monkey had an unusual meltdown while we were there...complete with real tears and the high pitched scream I hear only when we get shots. He hurt somehow and couldn't tell me where.

Off we went back home without our milk, bread, rattle, etc. As soon as I stepped in the door and looked on the counter for it, I remembered where it was at. I had it with me all along in the glove box of the car. I had put it there Saturday night before I went into church (don't ask me why now). I don't know if I was more frustrated standing at the register or here at home knowing it was only right there.

I know you're not suppose to cry over spilled milk, but can I cry over left behind milk?

Mommy's Day

Yesterday was my first Mother's Day!! What a beautiful day it was. My little Monkey slept through the night for the 3rd night in a row. When he woke up, we went into our bedroom and snuggled with Dad. Then him and Dad took me to breakfast, and we went to church. It was a beautiful sunny day! I got some wonderfully funny cards from both of my boys along with a beautiful bouquet of red roses and a gift certificate for some Mommy time...a massage...ahhhh!! This week we get to go pick out a deep freezer that I have been wanting ever since my milk has started to crowd out my freezer. It was a great day! I can't wait to spend many more Mother's Days with my boys and his siblings that the future will bring! Happy Mommy's Day to all you wonderful Mommies out there!! I have a new found appreciation for the day and for all on this journey called motherhood.

Requesting a flyby

Dear Air Force officials and whomever else:

I know that your Northern Edge 2008 is the largest military training event in Alaska for the year. I know that it is training our bravest men and women to be able to defend our country against the ugliest of enemies. I know that it is bringing many branches of our military together to collaborate and learn how to better defend our beautiful country. I don't take any of that away from you. I'm just voicing my frustration because you are disturbing my son's naps. You were so close today that I thought you were going to buzz off the top of my tree tops today. Or at least it sounded like you were that close. Seeing how I'm a sick Momma whose suppose to be resting while my Monkey rests, you are making it quite difficult on me. He is now waking up when you do these magnificent flybys with your multimillion dollar airplanes. He will appreciate this in a few years when he can stand with his dad and marvel at all your grandeur. But until then, I only wish you could do these exercises between his naps!! Fat chance I know! But it's worth a try and if anything, it helps a Momma feel better to voice her battles! I guess living an hour from the base doesn't do us any good when you are playing your war games. Until the the 16th of May, I guess we'll drudge through and maybe he will become immune to your noise!

Sincerely,
Monkey's Momma

PS. Thank you very much for being so brave and protecting my family and friends from the ugly enemy. I don't mean this letter to be in anyway disrespectful to the job that you do. You are truly our heroes!!!

Bigger and better toys!

My little Monkey graduated to the exersaucer this week. A sad day in Mommy's world because he's growing way too fast. An exciting day in his world because there are new things to drool on. He was so cute when I put him in it the first time....he's eyes were as big as saucers. His little feet barely touch the base but all's good in his world. He figured out how to move around the entire tray sampling each toy as he went. Gotta love Baby Einstein! Consequently, we retired the bouncer today. He is getting so big that he no longer sits or even reclines in it. His weight practically makes the seat lay flat. No fun for Monkey because all he can do is stare at the ceiling or at the toys he can't reach. One of the many graduations he's going to make in his life! At least managed to not shed a tear at this one!!
